The whole process of in vitro bioactivity will be described in the last section of this chapter, but the bioactive mechanism in bioactive glasses is based on the formation of a silica-rich layer on the glass surface when in contact with physiological fluids as a consequence of the ionic interchange of calcium and sodium ions.
In any case, the in vitro bioactivity of these mixtures has been reported (Serrano et al. 2008), while the in vivo behavior is still under research.
The textural and structural features of MBGs determine their accelerated in vitro bioactive behavior compared with traditional sol-gel glasses with similar composi- tions.
1.6.2.1 Parameters of in Vitro Bioactivity Tests
In this section the different parameters that are possible to modify during the in vitro bioactivity tests will be detailed.
